now. when we talk about paula broadwell, about how she's lost her top security clearance, obviously, her computer was found with a lot of classified information. do you think her relationship with david petraeus gave her access to that information? >> you know, it's not clear. everybody we talked to and sort of hearing from law enforcement officials that there's no evidence that would suggest that the information has been found in her possession, that she got that from david petraeus. we know she made a number of trips to afghanistan. she certainly had access to members at all levels of the u.s. military. and so, it's not clear where she got it from. presumably, it's part of the continuing fbi investigation. >> such a crucial question and what about this? you're a member of the cia external advisory. you have top security clearance on some things. she had top security clearance. what does that men in practice? >> paula broadwell was also a reservist in the u.s. army. when she was doing her mission as a reservist, she had access to classified material for that purpose. when you have
-mails. the government has taken away for now, the top security clearance of paula broadwell, the former mistress of david petraeus. this is after investigators found substantial classified information on her computer and the glare being question, did broadwell's relationship with david petraeus give her access to these classified documents? "outfront" tonight, cnn national security contributor, fran townsend. she's also a member of the cia external add voizry committee and knowed a lot about what it means to have top clearance. the name of the fbi agent, frederick humphries, who was by the way, involved in foiling a terrorist attack in 1999. very accomplished fbi agent. what do you know about the relationship? >> it's interesting. apparently, i understand from a senior law enforcement official that humphries and jill kelley met when she attended the citizens academy. this is a sort of familiarization program that the fbi runs across the country in communities to familiarize people and sort of get them to understand the work of the fbi in their community so it's part of the see something, say som

to resign is widening. petraeus' mistress paula broadwell sent emails to petraeus and other senior military leaders besides general john allen. meanwhile the fbi agent frederick humphries who launched the investigation of emails is being investigated by the fbi for his role in the case. specifically why he took concerns about this case to republican members of congress. house and senate panels are expected to meet again today with fbi and cia officials. they want to know whether national security was jeopardized and why congress didn't know about the investigation sooner. during a news conference on wednesday president obama praised david petraeus. >> general petraeus had an extraordinary career. he served this country with great distinction in iraq, in afghanistan and as head of the cia. by his own assessment he did not meet the standards that he felt were necessary a the director of the cia with respect to this personal matter that he's now dealing with, with his family and with his wife. and it's on that basis that he tendered his resignation and i accepted. >> they are looking into the

pentagon correspondent barbara starr. she's getting new information on paula broadwell. what are you learning, barbara? >> wolf, some really stunning new information. cnn has learned from two u.s. officials that paula broadwell's security clearance has been suspended. she is a serving reservist, if you will, with the u.s. army, a military intelligence analyst. as such, she would at least have a secret level security clearance. we are now told that security clearance suspended pending the outcome of several investigations. we went to the army to ask them for an official response. they will not say anything except the following. and let me read it to you. "appropriate actions with regard to this officer's clearance and access have been taken." the statement goes onto say "the army has been cooperating with federal law enforcement authorities in this matter. and those actions are ongoing." wolf, you will recall a couple of days ago the fbi went to broadwell's home. we all saw the video of fbi agents taking away boxes of material, computers. the discussion centering around what kind of c

on top of it. thank you. now to what investigators found in paula broadwell's home computer. here is national security correspondent jennifer griffin. >> as a military intelligence army reserve lieutenant can no paula broadwell has special clearance to view classified information but not to take it home with her. in addition, she could face charms under the uniform code of military justice if she was working for army at the time of her extra marital affair with david petraeus. the army is currently investigating. f.b.i. returned to her home in north carolina monday night and carted away computers and half a dozen boxes of documents we have since learned contain classified information. the f.b.i. has said there is no indication petraeus gave broadwell those documents. the president cited an ongoing investigation. >> i have no evidence at this point, from what i have seen, that classified information was disclosed, that in any way would have had a negative impact on the national security. >> the president was asked whether he thinks the f.b.i. should have told him sooner about the p

that uncovered the affair between david petraeus and paula broadwell. a search of broadwell's computer files turned up intimate e-mails with petraeus, and also revealed she may have mishandled some classified information that she'd collected for her book. but law enforcement officials say the investigation never uncovered a threat to national security. an f.b.i. director robert mueller, told congressional intelligence committee leaders today that was the primary reason they were not briefed on the investigation. the white house wasn't told until after the election. the president said the f.b.i. was following its own guidelines and he'd withhold judgment on the delayed notification. >> it is also possible that had we been told, then you'd be sitting here asking a question about why were you interfering in a criminal investigation? >> reporter: no one has been charged in case with a crime but late today the army did suspend paula broadwell's security clearance. scott. >> pelley: thanks, bob. the air force said today it is pulling jill kelly's gate pass for mcgill air force base. she was appare
